Corrugated Metal Roof Solar Mounting
Match the attachment to the corrugation profile, sheet construction, supporting structure and verified load path. Structural fasteners, profile-matched brackets and approved sheet-only systems are different solutions and should not be selected by appearance alone.
- Corrugated Sheet Metal
- Structural Fastening
- Approved Sheet-Only Options
- Rail or Direct-Attach
- System-Specific Sealing
Confirm the Roof Covering and Structure Before Choosing Hardware
Corrugated metal sheet can be installed over timber, steel purlins, decking or other roof assemblies. Similar-looking corrugations do not automatically have the same sheet capacity or fastening method.
- Measure corrugation pitch, wave height and the available fixing surface.
- Confirm sheet material, thickness/gauge and roof condition.
- Identify the supporting member and its spacing when the system fixes into structure.
- Check whether the selected bracket or short rail has data for the actual corrugated profile.
- Treat corrugated fibre cement as a separate roof-covering application.
Two Different Ways to Transfer the PV Loads
Determine the approved roof connection first; the rail or module interface comes afterwards.
Structural Fastening
Hanger bolts, solar fasteners or roof brackets can pass through the covering and engage timber, steel, decking or another approved support. Fastener type, embedment, edge distance and sealing detail belong to the specific roof build-up.
Approved Sheet-Only Attachment
Some engineered brackets or short-rail systems are designed to fasten to the metal sheet itself. Use this path only when the product documentation covers the actual corrugation, sheet material/thickness, fastener pattern and project loads.
Rail-Based, Short-Rail and Direct-Attach Are Separate Choices
The roof attachment and the module-support interface are related, but they are not the same design decision.
Continuous Rail
A roof fastener or bracket supports a continuous rail, with module clamps fixed to the approved rail profile.
Short Rail
Short rail sections support modules locally and use the attachment method documented for that rail and roof profile.
Direct-Attach
A compatible bracket can connect directly to the module attachment interface without a traditional continuous rail.
Information Needed Before Attachment Spacing Is Finalized
Corrugation Geometry
Roof photos, wave pitch/height, crest/valley dimensions and panel reference if known.
Sheet & Substructure
Sheet material/thickness, roof condition, purlin/deck material and support spacing where relevant.
Module Layout
Module model, dimensions, frame, clamp zones, orientation and preliminary array layout.
Structural Criteria
Project location, roof zones and applicable wind, snow and other design requirements.
Use the Sealing Detail Designed for the Attachment
Corrugated-roof attachments can use EPDM, butyl, factory-applied gaskets or other documented seals. The correct detail depends on attachment location, fastener, roof profile and product design.
- Install the attachment at the approved crest, valley or structural fixing location.
- Use the specified screw/rivet and matching gasket or sealing component.
- Apply the documented tightening method so the seal is not loose or over-compressed.
- Check material and coating compatibility between roof sheet, bracket/rail and fasteners.
- Review aged, corroded or very thin roof sheets before any sheet-only attachment is accepted.
Use Model-Level Data for the Final Mounting System
Do not apply one generic material, fastener or load specification to every corrugated-roof assembly.
| Roof covering | Corrugated metal sheet with measured geometry and verified roof condition. |
|---|---|
| Load path | Structural fastening to an approved support, or a documented sheet-only attachment system. |
| Sheet / support data | Sheet material and thickness/gauge plus purlin/deck details where the attachment loads the substructure. |
| Module support | Compatible continuous rail, short rail or direct-attach interface with verified module-frame compatibility. |
| Fastening data | Product-specific fastener type, pattern, embedment or sheet capacity, installation torque and allowable/tested loads. |
| Weathering | System-specific EPDM, butyl, gasket, washer or other documented sealing method. |
| Materials | Actual bracket, rail and fastener materials/coatings selected for the product and corrosion environment. |
| Attachment spacing | Set from the module layout, roof zones, verified component capacities and applicable structural design criteria. |

Corrugated Metal Roof Mounting Questions
Must corrugated metal-roof PV mounting always fix into the purlin?
No. Structural fastening into timber, steel or decking is a common path, but some engineered products are approved for sheet-only attachment on specific corrugated profiles. Follow the selected product data and project calculation.
Can hanger bolts be used on corrugated metal roofs?
Yes, where the selected hanger bolt or solar fastener is compatible with the roof build-up and engages the approved structural support with the required sealing detail.
Is a short rail automatically a sheet-only attachment?
No. Short rail describes the module-support architecture. The approved roof connection underneath it must still be confirmed from the product documentation.
What information is needed for a quotation?
Send the corrugation profile, sheet/support information, module data and layout, project location/design criteria and any roof-manufacturer restrictions.
